Jean Monnet Chair at the Willy Brandt Centre for the German and European Studies University of Wrocław invites to a guest lecture by dr. Nikita Lomakin (Memorial & University of Bremen) - Memorial: The past and the future. 

 

Memorial (Russian: Мемориал) is an international human rights organisation, founded in Russia during the fall of the Soviet Union to study and examine the human rights violations and other crimes committed under Joseph Stalin's reign. Prior to its dissolution in Russia, it consisted of two separate legal entities, Memorial International, whose purpose was the recording of the crimes against humanity committed in the Soviet Union, particularly during the Stalinist era, and the Memorial Human Rights Centre, which focused on the protection of human rights, especially in conflict zones in and around modern Russia. The organisation was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2022.

 

Dr Nikita Lomakin is a historian and since 2022 a researcher at the Forschungstelle Osteuropa at the University of Bremen in Germany. Before, dr Lomakin worked at Memorial as a head of archive digitalisation program, he was also a visitng scholar at the  University of Jena and at the Humbolt University in Berlin. His recent research projects concerned open archive of letters from and to GULAG, geographical databate of settlements from 1920 to 1989, publication of memoirs about GULAG as well as digitalisation of documents concerning Ostarbeiter/forced labor from Central and Eastern Europe.

 

The lecture will take place on 17 November from 11:00-12:30 in hybrid mode - stationary at the Willy Brandt Centre at Strażnicza 1-3 and remotely via Zoom
