Workshops Invitation and registration form-baner

The Willy Brandt Centre for German and European Studies in Wroclaw and the DAAD are pleased to invite to a series of workshops discussing the political, social and economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The events are designed in a hybrid form, combining face-to-face discussion of a small group (aprox. 10 people) with online participation (via Zoom) of other participants. All the workshops will take place at the Willy Brandt Centre in Wroclaw. The goal is to promote a debate on social, political and economic consequences of the pandemic, but also to establish a network of scholars working on these areas. The three guiding questions of the workshops are:

  • Are we witnessing a demise or resilience of representative institutions (parliaments) due to the COVID-19 pandemic? Or perhaps no change at all?
  • What has been the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on migration (and transmigration) between Poland and Germany?
  • What has been the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on European economic governance?

Workshop 1 (23.10.2020): Migration and the COVID-19 pandemic. The workshop welcomes papers discussing the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of migration and transmigration in the Schengen-area and beyond. More specifically, we are interested in contributions that investigate the impact of border-closure on social and economic activity of (trans)migrants but also their identity and attitudes towards the European Union.

Workshop 2 (30.10.2020): Parliaments and the COVID-19 pandemic. The workshop welcomes papers focusing on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on parliaments (national and the EP) in Europe and worldwide. More specifically, we are interested in papers that examine to what extend the pandemic weakened or perhaps fostered parliamentary powers regarding law-making, scrutiny and linkage. We welcome empirical and normative contributions from political scientists and legal scholars.

Workshop 3 (20.11.2020): European economic governance and the COVID-19 pandemic. The workshop invites contributions focusing on the impact of the pandemic on European economic governance. In order to counter the negative economic effects of the pandemic, EU leaders and the EU Commission agreed to establish a long-term Recovery Programme providing grants and loans to EU member states. The novelty is that the monitoring should no longer be limited to economic and budgetary policies but also concern the rule of law. The goal of the workshop is to assess these policy-developments from a political and a legal perspective. Is the COVID-19 pandemic a catalyst for deeper integration of European economic governance? Has the COVID-19 pandemic triggered changes that move the EU towards the fiscal union? The workshop welcomes papers addressing the latest developments in European economic governance in general, with a particular focus on the effectiveness of the mechanism (regarding monitoring of the economic and the rule of law area) as well as the multilevel accountability structure.
